11/8/2008  I really should go to Da Cajun Shak more often Ever had one of those places that you never get a bad meal, yet you just don't go to very often? Guilty. Da Cajun Shak sits at 21st and Woodlawn and is run buy a couple folks who stick out like a sore thumb in Wichita. They are genuinely friendly. I've kidded them about it. When's the last time you walked into a place and the owner sat down at the table and introduced himself? Yeah, you weren't in Wichita. It's a tough town to love. The people in Wichita have two settings. Completely closed off and wide open. These guys show true Acadian hospitality. Warning, if there is a college football game on, the TV will be tuned to it. (I wonder why they didn't open a sports bar instead?). These guys have a pretty good menu of standard Cajun victuals. Which to put another way, you won't find anything like it in the city. Their signature dish is catfish, delivered in the all-you-can-eat method. Great, if you are trying to fill up the bottomless pit of a teenager. Pictured below from front to back are the meatloaf sandwich, jambalaya and gumbo. All three were excellent. I have a confession to make. This about the only place I eat seafood at that isn't on a coast. Those who have lived on a coast and moved inland know what I mean. Also if you have never tried alligator, this is the place to go. It doesn't taste like chicken, chicken should taste so good. Heat isn't over the top, as it should be with the authentic stuff.
