9/28/2008  Taco Jay's, yeah I love that place.
OK here is my first non-wing post that I have been promising. Taco Jay's is a restaurant in Wichita, the South City area in general. It sits at 47th South and Seneca. It's been there for what seems like forever.

Now there used to be a place at Pawnee and K-15 called Taco Pete's. I loved that place. It was always full, the food was great, but then some pocket Einstein decided a Burger King would look better there. Seriously? We need another one of those? I know Taco Pete fans that boycott BK to this very day.

So I was in mourning. My assistant at the time, "Moe" told me about Jay's. Moe wasn't her real name, just everyone called her that after she said, "People should just call me Moe, I'm just the stooge!" I've always wondered what happened to her.

Anyway I try Jay's and love it. Jay's isn't exactly what I would call a date night place. It is a cop hang out, which is always indicator of a good fast meal. It is exactly that. A place to get great food; fast and inexpensively. Jay's also has something I LOVE. Their extra-hot sauce is fantastic. It is flavorful and burns like the sun. It has a very slight sweetness and a color that reminds me of an Indian tamarind chutney. To be honest, I think I could drink the stuff by the cupful.

I seem to always get the same thing. Not that everything I have tried hasn't been good. A monterrey and a pair of sanchos are my normal fare. The flour tortillas are really thin, so you don't have an overwhelming taste of them. The ingredients really come through. They are closed on Sunday and open for lunch and dinner. Probably my favorite lunch place, though I seem to find myself there most Monday nights when it isn't football season.

Try this gem for lunch and you'll become a regular.

The red stripes on the sancho in the background are a warning sign. Normally this monterrey would have lettuce, but I like it bare.
